She Gets It

Last night I had the pleasure of working with a group from our church putting together care packages for some soldiers in Iraq. Our town has adopted 85 military personnel and we are working with them to send some niceties. Little children decorated the boxes, teens wrote encouraging letters and the rest of us filled the boxes with everything from handy wipes to hard candy, all donations from our church.

I was a little worried that conversations might turn political. You know what I mean, wrapping God in the American flag and all that. But all anyone talked about was how much they hoped these gifts brought a little comfort into such an uncomfortable place.

When the work was done we circled up and were led in a moving prayer by one of our big hearted Elders. He prayed for safety and peace for all involved. He prayed for God to change hearts. He prayed boldly, tearfully and with all his heart.

When I put Rainey to bed last night we read a book and talked about her day. We discussed where those care packages were going and what the soldiers might do with them. Then we said our prayers. She was short and to the point:

"Dear God,
Please, please, please let the soldiers get those boxes and please let them share the candy with poor children in Iraq.
Amen.

Amen.

From the heartwarming stories and pictures I have seen and heard of the troops, that is exactly the kind of thing that they do on a daily basis. What a blessing that we can share in that honor. God bless our troops. God bless Rainey, for truly, "she gets it!"
